MOUNT KENYA

KAMWETI

KAMWETI

OVERVIEW

Adventurous climbers looking to explore the road-less traveled will find the Kamweti route ideal for ascent. Starting from the East, the trek goes through bamboo forest belt and dramatic landscape including river crossings to point Lenana and a quick descent on the Sirimon route.

Day 1

We leave Nairobi at 10.00am and drive to the southern slopes of Mt. Kenya. We arrive at the Castle Lodge for lunch and in the afternoon; we get to explore the serene environment on our own or with a guided nature walk in the forest. We may spot forest birds, Colobus Monkeys and possibly Elephants and Buffaloes. Dinner and overnight stay will be at lodge.

Day 2

There is no need for an early start today we can leisurely pack our mountain gear and start the short 4hour hike to the old forest station at (2400m). We will have our lunch on the way in the natural bamboo forest. Elephants, buffaloes and waterbucks are common here. We spend the night in tents.

Day 3

After breakfast at the camp, we hike on towards the Sagana River Camp at an altitude of 2980m. The hike, with lunch on the way, takes about 6hours and takes us through a dense bamboo forest. Every now and then the crew needs the machete to clear the way. After crossing the Sagana River, which can be a challenge during the rains we find our fly camp already set up by the crew for the evening. The guide and crew ensure that we master the challenge safe and successfully. Dinner and overnight stay will once again be in tents at the fly camp.

Day 4

After a good night rest, we continue with our walk at 8.30 am through the bamboo forest to the heath and moor land. The edge of the moorland marks our lunch spot where we take a rest. In the afternoon, we head up through unique endemic mountain vegetation of giant lobelia and groundsels to our camp at the banks of the Thego River camp at 3750m. The site offers exhilarating peak views. Dinner and overnight stay will once again be in tents at a fly camp.

Day 5

After breakfast at 7.00 am, our climb continues for about 3hours through beautiful tropical alpine vegetation, dominated by Seneca and Lobelia to the shores of Lake Hohnel. At the scenic lake, we stop for a lunch break as we enjoy a view of the clear waters. We then proceed for 2hours to reach Mackinder’s Camp (4250m) in the Teleki Valley. Early dinner and overnight will be at the Hut (Mackinders Camp) where we will have a good rest in the dormitories in preparation for the next day’s challenge -the Lenana Peak.

Day 6

After an early morning breakfast at 4.00am, the hike takes us via a steep screed to the Austrian Hut (4790m). Here, we take a short break with a sip of hot tea and biscuits before the final challenge on Point Lenana (4895m) via the Lewis Glacier. After watching the Sunrise and taking our summit photos, we descend on the northern side via Simba Cole to the Shipton’s Camp (4200m) where we take a rest. With lunch boxes in our backpacks, we continue descending through the Mackinder valley to Old Moses Camp at 3300m. We arrive at the camp in the late afternoon. After dinner, we take a well deserved rest after the strenuous, yet eventful day.

Day 7

Our final descend takes us to the Sirimon Gate (2700m). Here, we meet our driver for the onwards transfer. We bid our crew goodbye and transfer to Nairobi for departure or onward travel arrangements.
